Girls Soccer Loses Thriller to Central

September 27, 2001

GROVELAND, MA. - Central Catholic forward Maggie Ebert scored the game-winning goal with nine minutes remaining in the game to give the Raiders a 2-1 victory over Dracut, at Strawberry Field.

Dracut jump to an early 1 - 0 lead when Forward Jen Fontaine scored 20 seconds into the game. She fired a shot from 30 yards out which beat the Central Catholic keeper. Unfortunately, the referee was not in the right position to see the ball cross the goal line and the goal was called back.

Central then score the game's first official goal at the 29:17 mark of the first half when Maggie Ebert lofted a shot into the right corner of the net beating Dracut Keeper Micheala Anthony.

Dracut tie the score 1 - 1 with 10 minutes remaining in the game when Forward Jen Fontiane beat the Central Catholic keeper.

Central Catholic then scored the game winner when Maggie Ebert scored again beating Dracut Keeper Anthony with a shot thru her legs. The Dracut defense pleaded with the referee that she was offside by two yards but he once again did not see the play.

Dracut put a lot of pressure on Central Catholic for the rest of the game. Dracut had numerous chances to tie the game but once again a referee call and a few miss chances prevented the tie.

"It is always a good game when you never notice the referee in a soccer match. Unfortunately in this game the referee was responsible for the outcome. I felt that we were robbed. We played a decent game considering we didn't get much rest from last night emotional game against Methuen", said Head Coach Wayne Currie.

Sophomore Keeper Michaela Anthony made 10 saves for the Middies.

Playing well for the Middies were Lauren O'Donnell, Nichole Masse, Kelly Nicolls, Rachel Isabelle, Kacie McGlasson, Kaley Moore and Amanda Stafford.

The Middies will return to action Saturday morning in a non-league match against Newburyport. The game will begins at 10:00 a.m.
