Girls Soccer Upsets Undefeated Chelmsford, 2 - 1

October 16, 2001

DRACUT, MA. - Senior forward and league leading scorer Jen Fontaine scored the game winner with 11 minutes remaining to lift Dracut over Chelmsford on Senior Night. The loss was Chelmsford first of the year dropping their record to 9 - 1- 1.

Sophomore Susan Kelly got the Middies on the board first when she fired a 40 yard shot over the surprized Chelmsford goalie.

"Sue's goal was huge. That goal gave us confidence and put a lot of pressure on Chelmsford. Chelmsford have not played from behind all season and started to press and hurried their shots more," said head coach Wayne Currie.

The Dracut lead stood for more than 30 minutes before Chelmsford responded with the tying goal with 5 minutes remain in the first half.

Fontiane's goal was scored off a corner kick from Kelly.

Sophomore goal keeper Micheala Anthony was huge in net as she had to make several great saves to keep the Lions off the score board in the second half. Anthony recorded 10 saves on the night.

"It began to rain with about 7 minutes remaining in the game. Chelmsford has some great young shooter and I was nervous about the slippery ball but Micheala was all business tonight", continued Currie.

Playing well for the Middies were Amanda Stafford, Kelly Nicolls, Rachel Isabelle, Sarah Dahlinger and Viviana Martell.

The Middies next game will be on Tuesday when they entertain Notre Dame at 3:30 PM.
