Girls Soccer Defeated Hamilton Wenham in Scrimmage Opener

August 25, 2001

DRACUT, MA - The Dracut High School girl's soccer team opened its exhibition season Saturday morning with a 3-1 victory over Hamilton Wenham High School. Senior Sweeper Kelly Nicolls had the game-winner.

"Our fitness base is not there yet," said Coach Currie, who enters his fifth season as the head coach at Dracut. "We need to make some personnel and technical decisions within the next couple of days."

Hamilton Wenham jumped out early against Dracut, cutting through the right side of the Middies defense and launching several shots. Dracut goal keeper Micheala Anthony stopped the first two, but the H-W forward got a shot past her in the 4th minute to score. Less than five minutes later, the Middies countered with a goal from Jennifer Fontaine and tied the score 1-1.

Sarah Dahlingher challenged the H-W goal keeper 5 five minutes later and the ball bounced off a defender's head and when into the net to put the Middies ahead 2 - 1. Dracut buckled down on defense and brought in more firepower up front. In the second 20 minute period freshman Tina Boyd scored on a direct kick to seal the victory for the Middies and Dracut led 3 - 1

Freshman goal keeper Jennifer Cole made some splendid saves in the second half to keep H-M to one goal. "Both keepers played well today". Said Currie. "There are a few players that we need to look at today to see if they can play at this level. H-W was a good test for them".

The Middies will continue their pre-season schedule with another scrimage at Reading High School on Tuesday, August 28, at 3:30 PM. The varsity game will be played at Parker Middle School.
