Middies Take Back the CONE in 2 -1 victory

September 29, 2001

DRACUT, MA. - In the quest for the CONE--Senior forward Sarah Dahlingher scored the game winner by lofting in a leftfooted shot in the right corner of the net, as the Middies Girl's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over visiting Newburyport, in a Non-League game Saturday morning.

Every year Dracut and Newburyport games are played for the right to bring the CONE (Trophy) back to their school for bragging rights. In the last three games Newburyport has been victorious. But not this time...

Sophomore Nichole Masse opened the scoring in the 4th minute, with Senior Jennifer Fontaine setting the play in motion with a pass from the right wing. The early goal stunned the Newburyport faithfuls.

Newburyport Kristen Maloney scored at the 62nd minute from a sramble in front of the net which just got by hustling keeper Micheala Anthony to tie the score at 1 - 1.

"We haven't beating Newburyport in a year so this was a good win. Every year we play them well and we would find a way to lose the game. That did happen today and it shows the maturity of the kids." head coach Wayne Currie said. "We did what was needed in a game that we really didn't play that well."

The Middies defense was solid once again -- putting pressure on the Newburyport forward. They don't get sub much and put in a tireless effort every game.

Sophomore Keeper Michaela Anthony (5 saves) and Freshman Keeper Jennifer Cole (3 saves) shared time in net.

Playing well for the Middies were Catherine Nickerosn, Kelly Nicolls, Tina Boyd, Susan Kelly, Kacie McGlasson, and Amanda Stafford.

The Middies will return to action Tuesday when they entertain Billerica in a key game at 3:30 p.m.
