Middies Drop Indians, 5 - 2

September 18, 2001

TEWKSBURY, MA. - Senior forward Sarah Dahlingher had two goals and Senior forward Jennifer Fontaine scored two goals including the game winner as the Dracut Girls Soccer team topped Tewksbury, 5 - 2, in a physical contest before 50 fans at Strong Field in Tewksbury.

Fontaine scored the game-winning goal at 39:56 in the first half when she recieved a punt from goal keeper Micheala Anthony, dribbled by the Tewksbury defense and fired a shot low into the middle of the net pass the Tewksbury keeper Kelly Boyle.

The Middies scored first, less than three minutes into the game, when sophomore Susan Kelly put a ball low to the inside of the net which the Tewksbury keeper misjudged. Tewksbury freshman Sarah Russell beat two Middies defenders and put the ball wide of Keeper Michaela Anthony to tie the score at 1 - 1 with 13 minutes remaining in the half.

Dahlingher and Fontaine then ran a perfectly executed give and go in the penalty area to give the middies a 2 - 1 lead with five minutes to go in the half.

Fontaine scored her second goal at 22:04 of the second half, putting the ball in the left corner of the net from a corner kick from Kelly. Freshman Kaley Moore combined with Dahlingher one minute later to give the Middies a 5 - 1 lead.

Tewksbury's Russell scored her second goal of the game with three minutes remaining in the game to cut the Middies lead to 5 - 2.

"We played well today and I was very pleased with our effort. We have 14 dress players 2 of which are keepers. We have been doing a lot of shifting around. Once Rachel Isabelle went down in the first half with an injury that only left us with two subs for the remainder of the half and game. The other players really stepped up, said head Coach Wayne Currie."

The Middies outshot the Indians 23 - 10, and outcornered them 3 - 1.

Playing well for the Middies were Kacie McGlasson, Lauren O'Donnell, Amanda Stafford, Tina Boyd, Catherine Nickerson, Nichole Masse, and Kelly Nicolls.

Sophomore Keeper Michaela Anthony and Freshman Keeper Jennifer Cole shared time in net and both gave up one goal each.

The Middies will return to action Thursday when they travel to Haverhill. Competition is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the High School.
